How to use it
- Enter the time you started and finished each day. Use the clock format your device shows, AM/PM or 24 hour.
- Add unpaid break minutes, like a 30 minute lunch.
- Add your hourly rate to see your pay. Overtime starts after 40 hours a week by default, which is the US federal rule. Change it if yours is different.
If every weekday looks the same, fill in Monday and click Copy Monday to weekdays.
Hours and minutes vs decimal hours
Payroll and invoices usually need decimal hours. 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours, not 7.45. To convert, divide the minutes by 60: 15 minutes is 0.25, 30 is 0.5, 45 is 0.75. The calculator shows both.
Questions
How do I calculate hours worked?
Subtract the start time from the end time, then subtract unpaid breaks. For example, 8:30 AM to 5:15 PM is 8 hours 45 minutes, and with a 30 minute lunch it is 8 hours 15 minutes, or 8.25 decimal hours.
What about a shift that ends after midnight?
Just enter the times. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the shift crossed midnight.
When does overtime start?
Under US federal law, non-exempt employees get at least 1.5 times their rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states, like California, also count daily overtime. Check the rules where you work.
Is there an easier way to track my hours?
If you bill clients for your time, Sheaf has a timer and a weekly timesheet, then turns the hours into an invoice. It is free during beta.
Track hours without the math
