How to convert minutes to decimal hours
Divide the minutes by 60. 45 minutes is 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75 hours, so 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours. A common mistake is to write 7.45, which is actually 7 hours 27 minutes.
How to convert decimal hours back
Take the part after the decimal point and multiply it by 60. For 3.4 hours, 0.4 × 60 = 24, so it is 3 hours 24 minutes.
Why invoices use decimal hours
Multiplying is easy with decimals: 7.75 hours at $80 is $620. Doing the same with 7:45 means converting first, and that is where billing mistakes happen. Many freelancers also round to the nearest 6 minutes (0.1 hour) or 15 minutes (0.25 hour). Agree on rounding with your client up front.
